Chekhov club

Some photos from the "Chekhov Salon" in the "Literary Museum Badenweiler" in Badenweiler, a tiny town in the countryside in southwest Germany. This museum is very small and sort of in the middle of nowhere. So, here you can see most of it without going yourself. The entrance to the museum is free.

Also see Lenin on Tolstoy's vegetarianism - and Chekhov's 'learn, learn, learn'.

The many faces of Chekhov

This is the original Chekhov statue which was inaugurated on 25 July 1908 and which was melted down (!) in World War I. The statue was made of bronze, an alloy that consists mostly of copper, and the Germans needed copper. A letter from February 2016 (below) says that the museum has a model (mould) of the statue. So, the statue could be recreated if it is melted down. Not sure what happened to the mould.

Chekhov after his death
Chekhov died in Badenweiler, Germany, and was transported to Moscow in a refrigerated railway wagon (usually used for transporting oysters).

Chekhov died in the "Hotel Sommer" in Badenweiler on 15 July 1904 at 3 am.

Chekhov art monument from 2014

This Anton Chekhov (in German "Chekhov" is frequently spelled "Tschechow") monument from 1992 can be found in a public park (called "Kurpark"), about 500 meters from the "Chekhov Salon" museum.

In this photo you can see the castle ruin in the Kurpark. The Anton Chekhov in "behind" it. In the "front" of the park, coming from the Chekhov museum, there are some big buildings. Walk up towards the castle ruin, and behind it on the right hand side, you'll find the Chekhov statue.

Memorial plaque next to the statue. It says (in German):
"Anton Chekhov
1860-1904
Here stood, from 1908-1918, the first monument for the Russian writer. The Chekhov Museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Sakhalin Island), in 1992, donated a new Chekhov bust [the current monument] you can see here which was created by Vladimir Chebotaryov."
