Is the Osiris D3 vegan?

The original Osiris skate shoe called "D3" - released in 1999 - was a pro shoe by pro skateboarder Dave Mayhew. This shoe was vegan, i.e., the upper was 100% synthetic, without any animal-source leather.
Interestingly, Dave Mayhew is vegan himself and has been vegan since the 2000s (see here), but he wasn't vegan in 1999.

Currently, Osiris sells four different types of "D3".

  • The D3 OG
  • The D3 2001
  • The D3 E
  • The D3 S
All of these contain leather except for the "D3 OG", which seems to be vegan in all colourways.

The other three versions - D3 2001, D3 E, and D3 S - look notably different. So, you can easily distinguish them from the D3 OG.

The current D3 shoes are all unrelated to Dave Mayhew, I'm guessing. That is he probably doesn't get any royalties.

What about the glue?

I don't really know, and I usually don't ask anymore. Most skate shoes are made in China, Vietnam, or other East Asian countries, possibly in various factories. So, even if the skate shoe companies would go to the length of enquiring whether "the glues" (probably various) used for specific shoes contains animal products, they would hardly be able to verify this with a high degree of certainty. Additionally, if they did find out that a certain glue was used for a certain shoe and that it would not contain animal-derived products, this would not make the glue "100% vegan" necessarily, as many chemical ingredient companies conduct animal testing, especially in China.

The good news, however, is that classic bone glues are rarely used nowadays, especially for sneakers/trainers/sports shoes.

Even vegan-owned, fully vegan shoe companies - there aren't many and they don't have it easy - might not be able to verify that glues are 100% vegan. This is an overwhelmingly non-vegan world we live in, after all.

And then ... there aren't that many people who actually skate currently. Of these, the percentage of vegans is very low. Maybe as low as or lower than in the 90s (!?!?). And then ... there are ethical vegan skateboarders who regularly wear leather (don't ask me why !?!?).

So, companies like Sole Tech (and the new owners in Switzerland) and - yes - Cariuma deserve a lot of credit for continuing to (Sole Tech) or at least having tried to still offer and at least somewhat "push" vegan skate shoes.

I will not go into a would-be anthrpological rant about skateboarders, but the skateboard community cannot exactly give themselves credit for pushing vegan skate shoes or even be somewhat open-minded about trying out vegan skate shoes.

Note: There probably are more colourways of the D3 OG.

Note: Some sellers claim the uper is leather - it's always best to double-check before buying.

Note: The shoes appear to be made in China.

Note: The "D3 OG" shoes do not seem to have any info regarding the materials inside the shoes themselves (e.g., on the label on the inner side of the tongue). The shoe boxes do not seem to have any stickers with symbols (leather, synthetic, or textile) or material info printed on them either.
